I’m sorry, if we’ve become so forgetful of what is supposed to be the most precious and important thing in a parent’s life that we have to take off a comparably unimportant shoe and leave it in the back seat to remember a child is in the back seat, perhaps these parents shouldn’t be having kids...
I’m dumbfounded that people need this, and Waze of all things to remind them there’s a kid in the backseat. Seriously? Is this the norm nowadays? How is this acceptable? A coworker told me about this and my first thought was “Child Protective Services”. Especially on the Waze thing, using technology that distracts us as a reminder is stupid.

This seems like a very easy thing to write for someone who’s never experienced the sleep addled brain of a parent with newborns.

Maybe so, but I sure as hell was never forgotten by either of my parents at any point. Maybe I’m just lucky. And it still sounds stupid.

God, lifehacker. If they really wanted to give some useful advice they’d publish a story saying “stop re producing”

I’m OK with it. Parents will drive with their kids thousands of times, and they are expected to never make a mistake once during all those trips. Any little reminder helps.
Think of it as a checklist. No one ridicules pilots for having a written reminder to lower the landing gear.

Kinja ate my post over there, but this is a very real thing.
However, my kids were never, ever quiet enough to let this happen. Maybe that’s evolution at work.
Seriously, all those stories about “Ohhh, he sleeps so well in the car” or “We left for our trip at midnight so the kids could get some sleep.”
Never, ever, ever, worked for us. In the car? Kids are awake.

Im sure you remember your newborn years with clarity.

The most common scenario seems to be one where a parent ordinarily isn’t responsible for the child, but has to step in for some reason.
Life is messy . Even K9 dogs, a police officer’s most trusted partner, sometimes die from being left in the car. We don’t seem to be programmed to remember that not everyone traveling with us is capable of getting out, or even reminding us they can’t get out.

Sleep deprivation, mind falls into regular routine when scheduling changes between parents , kid falls asleep, brain on “autopilot” on the way to work ... I’ve never done it, or even gotten close to it, but as a dad with 3 young kids, I can see how it happens. It’s a tragic situation...

I have two kids, they are both still alive and neither me nor my wife have ever accidentally
left them in the car.
I have intentionally left a child in the car on a cool day with the windows down when they fell asleep on the way home but that is much different.

I have a 2 and a 4 year old, I can’t remember a time that my wife or I have ever come close to doing this, and my wife is really damn forgetful...

I sure don’t but this doesn’t happen with just newborns does it?

I’m the 4th of 6, and I was “ forgotten” plenty... Regularly the last kid picked up after practice, etc. I’ve forgiven my parents, but those are some deep scars.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 12:19 |

Maybe you just forgot? How do you think 2nd children come into this world if not for the magic of forgetting the newborn phase of the 1st?
I mean, I never did either...but I can tell you its not hard to almost do it, or forget something else entirely, or forget to do something like close the door or buckle up. If a parent says they’ve never accidentally forgot to do something when the baby life was hard...they are lying.

My parents did the same, though I never fell asleep in the car from my toddler years until recently after lengthy road trips.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 12:20 |

it does not, but thats a common time for it to happen on account of adjustment to the change in routine and sleeplessness .

Oh I have forgotten all sorts of other shit lol just not leaving them in the car. Second one for us was an accident ha. I still have the horror of the first 6 months in my head. Wife is wanting a 3rd, I think I am good. If you could get them handed to you at 6 months I’d have a ton of kids. And ours were relatively easy, I have friends with 2 year olds that don’t sleep through the night still. Not sure I could handle that.

Seriously. Every time I leave the house without the baby I have flashes of anxiety when I realize his carseat isn’t back there, terrified that I left him behind even though I know damn well he’s safety at home with mom. I can’t ever imagine him being so far down on my priority list that I’d forget he was with me.
H ammurabi had the right idea, if you get my drift.

This is not a hot take, it’s a FUCKING SANE ONE!!!!
I’m shocked at how parents were able to raise kids before cell phones and “free” reminders on their phones to GET THEIR FUCKING KIDS!!!
My mom managed to raise five kids by herself, without a cell phone, working full time, and going to school, and she didn’t leave any of us in the car. Yet parents nowadays seem to be incapable of caring for their offspring.
Jesus christ what has the world come to???

I went almost an entire year living in a fog. Then my son finally got a routine and started sleeping through the night. I was like, oh wow this is what it is like to get a full nights sleep, BLIS.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 12:31 |

Or the sleep addled brain of a toddler who has finally stopped being an ass and fallen asleep.

Both my 2 didn’t sleep through the night until 2. My front bumper deformation speaks volumes to the effects of this.

I never forgot one of my kids, but as a parent of a 2 month old/ 2 yearold / 4 year old and a 9 year old i understand how it could happen

3 kids.
Not once have I forgot the most important things I have. PERIOD.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 12:37 |

Likewise. I’ve never forgotten them, but its very easy to point and judge if you’ve never been there. If you have and you hear about these stories your reaction is hardly ever anger, its more deep sadness because you know how it could happen.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 12:39 |

I also have never forgotten my kids. but if you want we can start up the the game again of us not agreeing on things for some random reason.

With how people are so attached to their phones these days, I can see how people do. Maybe they should put their phones back there, then we’d all be safer, and the kids don’t have to suffer a slow painful death because they’re parents shouldn’t have kids.

I have several takes.
1. The fact that there’s an article about it is hilarious more than anything.
2. If you are doing this, it shows (to me at least) that you care about the kid. If you aren’t confident in your abilities to remember, or if you aren’t usually the parent who has to look after the kid, or maybe you’re a grandparent or something, I have no issues with you leaving yourself an obvious reminder.
3. A lot of the “Child dies in hot car” stuff seems to me like it was the result of either ignorance or neglect. Either “it won’t hurt them to stay while I shop” or “meh, they’re asleep, they can survive a few hours”. The one that got left in the office parking lot while the mother was at work springs to mind. A missing shoe isn’t going to fix that.
4. I tap my pockets several times during the day even though I KNOW I brought everything with me. I can’t imagine forgetting a baby.
5. Better idea than taking your
shoe off all the time
—put the carseat in the middle seat, and develop good driving habits. In other words, check your mirrors regularly and back into parking spots instead of pulling in. Every time you look in the rear view mirror you will see your kid--and backing in means you will see them immediately before you plan to get out of your vehicle.

Better
than a shoe. I’m betting many people would forget their shoes before their phone. Plus, less texty drivey

Or maybe it happened at the same rate as it does now, we just weren’t tapped into a 24 hour instantaneous news cycle back then.

Better idea than putting the carseat in the middle (tho a good one), put the cellphone in the backseat. Less texty drivey as a benefit.

lol so they are gunna leave thier shoe in the back so they can tell the baby face to face th at they will only be gone for 20 minutes

my parents never left me in the car and it shocks me now that I hear what they were really up to. I grew up in the 70's/80's. Of course they drove Beetles for most of those formidable years so it’s hard not to see someones there.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 14:47 |

I think it’s a catch 22. The parents that would use anything like this, are probably the parents who wouldn’t leave their kid in the car in the first place. The parents who are, aren’t going to do any of these things.
I heard some advise a while ago, that if when you find out your going to be a parent. If your worried about being a shit parent and fucking up your kid, you'll probably be an ok parent. It's the people who aren't worried about being bad parents that wind up being bad parents.

That’s what I usually see suggested, this is the first I’m seeing a shoe being suggested.
